Giovanni’s room by James Baldwin- Book Review

Published year: 1956,
Genre: Psychological fiction

‘Giovanni’s Room’ is set in Paris during a time of scarcity, where jobs are hard to come by for those who arrive with nothing, while the city indulges in fine dining and debauchery for the wealthy. The protagonist, David, has journeyed to the city in search of himself, seeking escape from his home in America.

David harbors a deep hatred for his own sexuality, and his fervent desire to keep his true self hidden ultimately leads to the destruction of everything he holds dear. His encounter with Giovanni on one fateful night ignites something within David that he refuses to acknowledge.

“Much has been written of love turning to hatred, of the heart growing cold with the death of love. It is a remarkable process. It is far more terrible than anything I have ever read about it, more terrible than anything I will ever be able to say.”

— James Baldwin, Giovanni’s Room

The affair, initially thought to last only a night, becomes Giovanni’s salvation as he grapples with hunger, misery, and the ache of unrequited love for David. Despite his efforts, David remains emotionally distant, ensconced behind walls he dares not break through. Torn between his “correct” choice, Hella, a woman he has proposed to who has embarked on her own journey, and Giovanni, whose presence awakens feelings David has long suppressed, the protagonist struggles to come to terms with his identity and the possibility of a connection with Giovanni. When he finally accepts his truth, it is too late—for both of them.

Secondary characters play significant roles in the relationship between David and Giovanni, illustrating the challenges of honesty and authenticity. Jacques, an affluent older man who belatedly grapples with his own desires, seeks solace in superficial affection purchased with money. The landlord, Guillaume, abuses his power over the workers in his bar, displaying malice while feigning politeness and chivalry when necessary, igniting a simmering anger in the reader as he torments Giovanni.

Each character in the book is flawed, including Giovanni, whose misogynistic views reflect the environment and upbringing of his time. Hella, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and freedom, faces her own failures and reality checks, providing insight that resonates with modern readers. And yet she seem to come back with her own self preservation thoughts more than her love for David. These flaws make each character real and true to their essence.

As the story unfolds, the reader is compelled to continue, haunted by each word, yet knowing that it will never be enough.

The love written between Giovanni and David was passionate, cruel with a layer of deep affection that it hurts to go over the next pages to witness their inevitable separation.

You weep for the love that tore apart but it felt true to your bones because you saw the beginning and as mentioned in book, “you won’t rest until you see the end.”. The affair which was bound last for a night become Giovanni’s salvation as he struggles with his hunger and misery and the ache between his ribs while seeing the man he feels so deeply for trying to remain impassive. Whatever he did nothing seem to reach David, who has his own set of walls that he never dared to break through and when he finally accepted it was too late. All too late.

A good read with each word haunting you to read more and yet knowing it is not enough.

The Bloody Chamber- By Angela Carter

The book cover is certainly an intriguing one. Since the time it was published, it has had many covers, the one I got was the one where on a black background, a woman wearing a red cape is shown and we can see her naked legs. On the back of the cape, the title is written. When I first saw it, I didn’t think much about it. I haven’t read what the story is all about, just knew it has a fantasy element.

A reader of today’s generation, where vampires and werewolves are romanticized, I thought there was a high chance the story would be something about a hidden chamber and some supernatural elements wrapped in it.

The story is about a young bride who is going to a faraway island where her husband’s castle awaits her, her fear and excitement for her future, and her enigma of a partner. This story is inspired by folk tales and fairy tale elements. And if you are into dark retellings, this could be a good choice. A short book that could be finished quickly and leave a distinct taste in your mouth.

Certainly, the story grips you and you are anxious as it unfolds with the protagonist as you aren’t aware exactly where the story is leading up to, the girl even though is young has her instincts in her that keep screaming at her but she chooses to avoid them and that’s relatable. How many times, you have stopped yourself from doubting your closed one and just blamed it all in your head? The girl is practical and she chooses to marry a guy much older than her in the hopes of having a comfortable life but as the story progresses, she realizes it was all her fantasy. Being rich doesn’t make you happy and she longs for her mother who knew all along that her daughter might be making a mistake but let her live the life and make her own choices which is a very tough job. Even though her appearance was less, she gave the kind of hope only a mother could provide in her embrace. The protagonist and her insecurity of not being able to match up to the standards raised by her husband’s ex-wives and her rebel as she did what she felt like even in a foreign place trying to stand her small feet by finding solace in music was beautiful.

It was a short poignant story, written in clever words that you would always try to find hidden meanings in them.

The Blue Umbrella By Ruskin bond

When I pick this book for my next read in book club, my intention was clear. An established author, a short book and good reviews.

Even people who are new to reading should be able to finish this book and we will all get to know a good story to discuss. What I haven’t been expecting was to taken by surprise by the innocence and purity in this book.

I haven’t read any Ruskin Bond book before so yeah the words I have heard for him now seem completely sane and justified. He deserves the praises.

A simple and sweet story of a small girl who bargain her lucky pendant for an umbrella and the events that take place after she gets it.

The compassion shown by the little girl and the greed express by adults it displays how your age doesn’t make you wiser. The underlying biased behaviour of people who look down upon someone was significant.

It was nothing too dramatic but every event and dialogue is realistic and if you remember long enough you will realise you have seen such instances and maybe unconsciously did them as well.

It was a worth read for anyone who like to read and even for people who doesn’t like to read, this is such a short book that you can complete it in an hour or so.

The world has indicted her as a criminal and her art value has skyrocketed. But none of that matters to her anymore, she is imprisoned in Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London. Doctors have given up on her and the world has forgotten her. Well, except him.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist and Alicia’s case fascinates him and he believes he is the only one who can help her. Something inside Alicia pull a chord within Theo and he is determined to break her silence.

An amazing read where every word has been chosen with care. Theo starts his journey with Alicia in great hopes. But just after their second meeting, he realizes that he needs to dig deeper. Every part that he uncovers about Alicia, gave him more puzzles than answers. Why did she do it? The people in her life have varied opinions about her but can they be trusted to be unbiased?

As he did his best to help Alicia, he face the scrutiny of fellow doctors who believes that Alicia is borderline and no one can save her. Theo feels like there are walls that are keeping Alicia in that state and he fights with everyone to free her. Without caring they are tainting his reputation.

His investigation leads him to parts of Alicia’s life that were not told before and then there is Alicia’s diary. He is in a dilemma and wants to get the answers and Alicia needs to speak so he could know he is reaching her. But will she? Will she recognise his efforts or has he been really fighting with a wall?

What I like the most is you have no clue about the reasons until the writer allows you that right. It’s a page-turner for sure but apart from that he navigates the delicate relationship between the therapist and patients.

If you have read ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn then you will like this book. Absolutely will recommend it to anyone who likes psychological thrillers.

Love that doesn't include honesty doesn't deserve to be called love.- Alex Michaelides

The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides

This isn’t the formal review just while reading this quote speak to me and I couldn’t help the urge to write down my thoughts.

How true it is that you can’t claim about your love when you are being deceitful. And not just towards someone else, you could never love yourself until you start to accept the truth. Accept the things that are hard, disheartening and things you keep avoiding.

You know how we lie to ourselves that we don’t care about something just so it wouldn’t hurt if we lose it. The lie we say about starting afresh when the past still lingers.

It could be anything. You could be lying to yourself, your parents or your partner. You may convince yourself, this is for the best. You might argue that they would only be hurt by the truth but reality is you are just afraid of accepting things. You don’t want a change, you are afraid of confrontation or maybe you are just confused.

And this is like the hardest step to take, and yes, there will always be the possibility of everything going wrong but there is no love without honesty. One need to have the struggle, the hardships, the fear before one get their love.

So, if you are reading this take the first step. And be honest and be in love.
